Yuletide Recs!

And yes, I'm NOT coming in under the wire here, though I'd hoped to. First rec is the story I received for my very own:

Of Empires and Education (1794 words) by Fabrisse
Fandom: Discworld - Terry Pratchett
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Samuel Vimes, Havelock Vetinari
Summary: The future of Ankh-Morpork is discussed.

Once you land there, you'll see that it really doesn't need any additional pimpage from me, but hell, IT WAS WRITTEN FOR ME! ME, ME, ME!!!! So, yeah. I'm reccing it, because it's damn awesome, and I can see this as strongly possible future canon.

The Night of the Decisive Defection (4699 words) by Perryvic and Zaganthi (Caffiends)
Fandom: Wild Wild West (TV)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: James West, Artemus Gordon
Summary: The man at the lead pulled his horse around deftly in the direction of Jim's voice, holding a white handkerchief in the air. He was a cavalry officer, there was no doubting it from the hat and the gold cord. "Hold your fire! I want to discuss terms of surrender."

I used to watch The Wild Wild West when I was a kid (Robert Conrad's blue eyes and dimples drew me in completely), and while the anachronisms sometimes confused the hell out of me, the relationship between James West and Artemus Gordon was fun and perfect. This fic shows how the two might have met and captures some of the anachronistic feel of the show.

marijin min nar (11020 words) by Annie D (Scaramouche)
Fandom: Wishmaster (1997)
Rating: Mature
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Alexandra Amberson/Josh Aickman
Characters: Alexandra Amberson, The Djinn, Josh Aickman, Wendy Derleth, Raymond Beaumont, Shannon Amberson, Lt. Nathanson
Summary: In which Alex learns that beating a Djinn isn't a one-time deal.

I know diddly and squat about Wishmaster, but this story drew me in nonetheless, and I think it's worth a look.

She-Wolf (1576 words) by Kittydesade
Fandom: Sons of Anarchy
Rating: Not Rated
Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings, No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Gemma Teller Morrow, Tig Trager
Summary: Gemma reflects on what she's built, and wonders if she's built her life only to tear itself down again.

I don't know the fandom directly, so I can't say if the characterization is solid or not, but in terms of getting a sense of the characters and situation, this is a terrific little gut punch. I'm sympathetic to Gemma; she's strong and kind of an asshole, but she shows a hell of a lot of self-awareness in this fic, and that's why I liked it so much.

There's No Place Like (1216 words) by Merfilly
Fandom: Magnum P.I. (1980)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jonathan Quayle Higgins III/Thomas Sullivan Magnum IV
Characters: Jonathan Quayle Higgins III, Thomas Sullivan Magnum IV
Summary: It's just after the Gulf War, and a sailor breezes back into Higgins life, but he knows there's more than smooth sailing at work.

I always enjoyed the relationship between Magnum and Higgins, and this fic does a good job of capturing it post-canon. The author marked it as slash, but personally, I didn't see anything deeper than what was shown on television. Your mileage may vary.

where the boys are (1902 words) by Orangesparks
Fandom: It - Stephen King
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Beverly Marsh, Henry Bowers, Belch Huggins, Patrick Hockstetter, Al Marsh
Summary: Beverly Marsh isn't one of the girls, but she'll never be one of the guys, either.

The obvious monster in It is absurd, and it never scared me half as much as the "human" characters who populated Derry. Anon captures the horror of being a child in a town where other children feed on the weakest while the adults do nothing. Trigger warning for implied child abuse, as well as violence between underage characters.
